Compounded medications are not FDA approved. FDA does not verify their safety, effectiveness, or quality before they are marketed. A compounded medication is not an FDA-approved generic and should not be assumed equivalent to, interchangeable with, or the same as an FDA-approved product.

Compounding may be appropriate when a licensed provider determines that a patient's medical needs cannot be met by an available FDA-approved product or in another circumstance permitted by law. The provider and pharmacy are responsible for determining whether a compounded prescription is lawful and appropriate for the individual patient.

GLP-1 medications

Semaglutide and tirzepatide are active ingredients found in FDA-approved prescription products for particular indications. A compounded product containing one of these ingredients is not itself FDA approved. Compounded oral GLP-1 treatments

Other compounded treatments

The regulatory and scientific status of NAD+, sermorelin, MIC with vitamin B12, GHK-Cu, and other compounded preparations may vary by ingredient, route, formulation, pharmacy type, and current law.
